Daniel Goodwin Obituary

Daniel Will Goodwin died at home surrounded by his loving family on November 13, 2019 at the age of 81.  He was born May 2, 1938 in Grand Forks, ND.  Dan was the youngest of 6 children. He attended Central high school, UND and U of M school of Medicine. He married Shirley Johnson February 20, 1960 and together they had 5 children. After Medical School, Dan and his family settled back in Grand Forks. He proudly served as a Captain in Vietnam for a medical unit. In Grand Forks he was a partner at Valley Medical where he practiced medicine for 28 years. He then completed a Bush Fellowship so he could serve as a locum physician to help small towns and rural communities receive health care. During his years in GF he served on multiple committees and community organizations, Medical director of United Recovery Center, as well as President of the ND chapter for the Academy of Family Physicians.  He was honored and recognized for his many contributions to medicine but most memorable was as ND Family Physician of the year in 1989.  He practiced medicine for 50 years until retirement in 2014.

 

In 1996, relocated to Deerwood, MN to be near family where he then joined a small medical group in the area and developed lasting friendships and relationships.

He will be remembered for his love of God, family, friends, work and service to others. Many cherished memories of golf outings, picnic pontoon rides, ice rinks on the lake, grandkid wagon rides down the driveway, seafood menu New Year’s Eve, family vacations, music, gardening, grilling on the deck with family and friends. He was incredibly charitable, his grandchildren’s biggest fan and Shirley’s sweetheart.

 

He is survived by: Shirley, his loving wife of 59 years; four children and spouses, Gayle Pund (Jamie) Burnsville, MN, David (Monica) Deerwood, MN, Julie Rife (Daran) Arvada, CO and Jennifer Heintz (Wade) Savage, MN and special nephew James (Pam) Lynn Haven, FL; eleven grandchildren, one great grandson; brothers, Walter and Gene; sister, Marilyn and many beloved nieces and nephews.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Marion Goodwin, son Jeffrey, brother Donald, sister Ellen.

 

A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 17, 2019 at the Salem Lutheran Church in Deerwood. Full military honors will be presented by the Walter Scott Erickson American Legion Post #557, Deerwood.  Burial will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Sunday.    

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to CRMC Home, Health, and Hospice.  Arrangements are with the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby.
