Janeth Schmidt Obituary

Janeth Ann “Jan” Schmidt, age 90 of Deerwood died on October 22, 2019 at Hallett Cottages.  She was born on October 17, 1929 in Lucan, Minnesota to Gustav and Pearl (Woolley) Schlick.  Jan graduated from Cannon Falls High School in 1948 and from the Charles T. Miller Hospital School of Nursing in 1949.  She married Eugene “Gene” Schmidt on February 3, 1951.  She worked as an LPN at Red Wing City Hospital and then at St. John’s Hospital in Red Wing for 28 years, retiring in 1992.  Over the years, Jan cared for countless newborn babies and was an instructor for both pre and post-natal classes.  Jan and Gene raised their family of six children in Red Wing and moved to Deerwood in 1997.  Jan was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Deerwood.  She was well known as an expert baker of cookies and breads which she shared generously.  Jan was an avid sports fan and opened many conversations with a run-down of the latest baseball, football, basketball or hockey game she watched.  Her unabashed ‘recommendations’ to referees and umpires were legendary.  Jan was affectionately called “Mukka” by her grandchildren, she was a kind and generous soul whose life lesson to all of her family was to be happy for others.  Jan had a special love for dogs, especially her black lab “Sophie”.

Jan is survived by her six children, Michael Schmidt of Hager City, WI, Suzanne Anderson of Cold Spring, Kathleen (Daniel) Gray of Eden Prairie, Christian of Chaska, Joel (Becky) of Red Wing, and Amy (Randy) Stanfield of Deerwood, sixteen grandchildren and twenty three great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2016, her parents, brothers Gerald, Calvin, Merton and Gustav, sister Virginia Lundell, son-in-law Mitchell Anderson and daughter-in-law Kelly Schmidt.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Crosby on Saturday, November 2 at 11:00am with Father Eli Gieske presiding.  Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service.  Committal will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls on Tuesday, November 5th at 10:00 a.m.  Arrangements are by Koop Funeral Home of Crosby, MN.
