Maurice “Gene” Calkins age 93 of Bay Lake died on December 17, 2018 at his home. He was born in Crosby on January 31, 1925 to William and Evelina (Anderson) Calkins. Gene was a WWII Marine Corp Veteran, serving in Iwo Jima. He married Carol Woods on October 13, 1951 in Wibaux, MT. Gene operated his farm in Bay Lake Township and also worked for Jack Veit House Moving Company with 32 years of service. He was a member of the Walter Scott Erickson American Legion Post #557, Deerwood.
Gene is survived by his wife, Carol; six sons, David Calkins, Doug (Gay) Calkins, Richard (Jodi) Calkins, Robert (Lisa) Calkins, Michael (Tammy) Calkins, Patrick (Terri Knutson) Calkins all of Bay Lake; three daughters, Judy (Jim) O’Keefe of Crosby, Susan Calkins of Duluth, and Jeanette (Bert) Lener of Stanchfield; fourteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.
Preceding Gene in death are his parents and one sister, Doris Woods.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 21, 2018 at the Cascade United Methodist Church in Deerwood. Full military honors will be presented by the Walter Scott Erickson American Legion Post of Deerwood. Burial will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls. Visitation will be on Friday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services on Friday at the church. Arrangements are with the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby.
