Alice L. Peterson, 88, of Deerwood died December 22, 2025, in Aitkin, MN after a brief illness. She was born April 11, 1937, in the Bemidji Hospital, the daughter of Charles and Ellen (Marrs) Gray.
Alice graduated from Kelliher High School in 1955. After graduation, she answered a newspaper ad offering work at a resort, which brought her to Deerwood where she met her future husband and father of her children, Herbert (Pete) Swanson. They were married in 1955 and shared over 18 years together until Pete’s sudden death in a snowmobile accident in 1974. She finished raising her two children alone and in 1981 she married Levern Peterson of Aitkin. They spent 33 years together until Levern’s death in 2014. Alice worked supporting her first husband’s cabinet making business, as a cook in a resort and a church camp, and other jobs as they came along. Alice was unassuming and asked little of anyone. She enjoyed life and accepted the challenges life threw her without complaint. She was an avid reader, baker and enjoyed long walks daily. Alice is
Preceding Alice in death are both husbands; her parents; a brother and one sister.
Alice is survived by two children, Bruce (Connie Lou) Swanson of Deerwood and Sandy (Jim) Anderson of Pillager; one sister, Marge Howard of Sun City West, AZ; two grandchildren Anna Swanson and Naomi Swanson, and countless friends and extended family. She held her sister-in-law Loretta Ruschmeier of Aitkin, her cousin Dorothy Gross of Blackduck, and her friend Ed Thue of Walker especially close to her heart.
A celebration of life will be held in the spring of 2026. Arrangements are with the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby.
