Betty Louise Smith

June 17, 1925 — March 12, 2016

Betty Smith age 90 of Emily died on March 12, 2016 at her home. She was born on June 17, 1925 in Chicago, IL to Otho and Jeanette McFarland, she was the eldest of four children. Betty attended Thorton High School in Blue Island, Illinois and received her Bachelor's degree in psychology from Loyola University in 1943. She went on to become a school teacher beginning her career in a one room school house in Pembroke, IL where she met her future husband, William L. Smith. They were married April 22, 1949 and made their residence in Chicago. Betty and Bill, as they were affectionately known, had three children, William, Susan and Reginald. In 1972 the family moved to Emily, MN. Retired from teaching, Betty enjoyed painting, playing the organ and working in her beautiful rock garden. She is best remembered for her service to Jesus as church organist for over 22 years at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Outing and as a truly gifted artist.

She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Otho Kelly McFarland, and loving husband, Bill.

Her legacy and beauty will continue to live on in her sister, Patricia Atherton; brother, Walter McFarland; her children, William H. (Audrey) Smith, Susan Smith and Reginald (Karen) Smith; ten grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Outing. Arrangements are with the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby.
