Boyd “Bud” Smith age 97 was taken to his heavenly home on March 26, 2014 at the Waunakee Manor in Wisconsin with his family at his bedside. Bud was born on February 25, 1917 in Ironton, MN to Thomas Ambrose and Val Marie (Hunter) Smith.
As a youth Bud lived in Ironton, played with the Ironton Hockey Team, worked at Carley Anderson’s Grocery, attended Ironton Elementary School then the C-I Central High School. During the 1940’s he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp helping to develop the Gun Flint Trail. Bud married Jeanette Norma Ruoko in 1946 in Minneapolis. They soon moved to Crosby, MN to establish their family home. Various mines provided employment, Rabbit Lake, Pickands Mather, Leach Brothers Lab and he finally retired from the Erie Mining Co. in Hoyt Lake, MN. For a few years he worked for his brother Tom in Austin, MN at Tommy’s Super Club. His third career included chauffeur for Librarian Jeanette Smith and working as her chief assistant in cataloging books and billing. Bub retired at the age of 90.
Bud enjoyed family sporting events at Smith’s Field, golfing, fishing, and picnics.
He was a master cribbage player and crossword puzzle worker. He enjoyed meetings at the 4 pm Men‘s Social Club and the C.B. with old-time miners. His sharp
wit and ready smile will be missed by all who knew him.
Those surviving Bud include; brother, Daniel Glenn Smith of Owattana, MN; children, Susan Carol McCloskey, Robert Boyd (Marianne) Smith, Patrick George (Judi) Smith, Pam Smith, Richard Einar (Mary) Smith, Maureen Valli Smith Alaboud, Janet Sheana Smith; 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Jeanette; daughter, Peggy; his sisters, Dorothy “Dode”Gustad, Alaine McNelly, Jean Brown, Val “Honey” Smith, Sherry Smith and 1 brother, Thomas E. Smith.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 am on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Crosby. Burial will be at the Lakewood Cemetery in Crosby. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday. In lieu of flowers memorial are preferred to the JF Hallett Memoiral Library. Arrangements are with the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby.
