Harlan R. "Smokey" Holmvig

February 16, 1931 — August 14, 2017

Harlan R. “Smokey” Holmvig, age 86 of Crosby died on August 14, 2017 at St. Cloud Hospital.  He was born on February 16, 1931 in Crosby to Rudolph and Louise Holmvig. He married Molly Thoms on May 28, 1955. Smokey was retired from the U.S. Navy Seabees.  He served in both Vietnam and Korea.  He helped reorganize the Boy Scott Troop 100 and started the Cub Scouts Troop 100 of Crosby.  He was a member of the Fleet Reserve, the DAV, Myrin-James American Legion Post #443 of Ironton, and VFW Post 443, Seven Points, TX.

Smokey is survived by three sons, Harlan “Gene” Holmvig and Martin Holmvig both of Crosby, and Robert “Joe” Holmvig of Palm Desert, CA; three daughters, Lorraine “Lorri” Haugen of Aitkin, Lynda Burdick of Crosby and Mary and John Newton of Houston, TX; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Preceding Smokey in death are his wife Molly in 2009; his parents; grandson, Matthew Newton; brother, Gary Holmvig and son-in-law, Mark Burdick.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at Koop Funeral Home in Crosby, MN.  Burial will be at the Lakewood Cemetery in Crosby with full military honors given by the Myrin-James American Legion Post #443.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the funeral home on Saturday.
