James Grimes of Crosby, age 81, passed away on December 8, 2024. He was born in Minneapolis to Cyril and Marian (McDonough) Grimes on January 23, 1943. Jim married Jean Tinker/Treakle on July 22, 1968 in Minneapolis. He was a Vietnam era U.S. Navy veteran.
Jim was the retired owner/operator of the Custom Rubber Stamp Company, and was a local organist, pianist and singer for several area churches. He wrote several cantatas. Commissioned by Heartland Symphony Orchestra, he composed “Civil War Memories” with a World Premiere performance by the Brainerd Symphony Orchestra in their “Americana” concert in 2013. Jim directed several musicals, and was also a member of the Geritol Frolics.
Jim is survived by his wife, Jean; son, Steve (Cindy) Grimes of Indianapolis, IN; daughter, Paula (Tom) Powers of Fridley; brother, Richard (Marie) Grimes of St. Louis Park; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are his parents; son, Timothy; brothers, Charles and Michael; and sister, Patricia Grimes.
Funeral services will be held at 11am, Friday, December 27, 2024 at St. James Catholic Church in Aitkin. Military honors will be presented by the Myrin-James American Legion Post #443, Ironton. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers. Arrangements are with the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby.
