James Christopher “Jim” Jones, age 79, passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 19, 2026. Born on December 2, 1946, in Racine, MN, to Paul John Jones and Eleanore Evelyn Jahns, Jim lived a life defined by a profound sense of duty to his country, his community, and his family.
After graduating from Spring Valley High School, Jim proudly served his country in the United States Army from December 1965 to December 1968. His commitment to helping others continued throughout his life, leading him to a career as a Surgical Registered Nurse at the Virginia Regional Medical Center and a dedicated tenure as a volunteer firefighter for Cherry Township.
Outside of his professional life, Jim was a man of the land. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and swimmer, but he was perhaps happiest when farming with his beloved John Deere. In his later years, he found great peace in going for walks around Crosby and never turned down the deep relaxation of taking a sauna—true hallmarks of a life well-lived in the North Country.
Of all his many roles—soldier, nurse, and firefighter—Jim was most proud of raising his three children and his grandchildren. His family was his greatest achievement and his deepest source of pride.
“Ol’ Dad” is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Arlene Jones; his children, Jason (Anna) Jones of Reston VA, Darin (Angela) Jones of Cloquet MN, and Lisa (Christopher) Rydberg of Ironton MN. “Pa” also leaves behind the grandchildren who were the light of his life: Tyler Jones, Matthew Jones, and their mother Darcy Jones; Danielle Rydberg, Dominic Jones, Jacey Rydberg, Dana Jones, Evan Rydberg, and Allie Jones.
A Memorial Gathering will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. with sharing of memories of Jim’s life and legacy at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, 2026 at the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby.
