Jim Nelson age 74 of Deerwood died on January 27, 2016 unexpectedly from a heart attack. He was born on December 22, 1941 in Thief River Falls to Harold and Hazel (Gulseth) Nelson. He graduated from the Thief River Falls High School Class of 1960. He married Myrna Hallstrom on November 3, 1962 in Thief River Falls. He was employed with the Spring Lake Park Police Department from 1966 to 1980. Jim was then employed as a detective with the Anoka County Sheriffs Departments from 1980 to 1992. Retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Deerwood and a long time member of the Cuyuna Iron Range Heritage Network. Jim is survived by his wife Myrna; 2 daughters, Mary (Tom) Johnson of Andover and Nancy (Neil) Jones of St. Paul; 3 grandchildren, Kaitlin Johnson and Jackie and Mike Jones; 1 sister, Karen (John) Dyrseth of Modesto, CA and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Jim in death are his parents, Harold Nelson and Hazel Nelson Cloutier. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at the Salem Lutheran Church in Deerwood. Burial will be at the St. Hilaire Community Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday. Arrangements are with the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby.
