Michael Patrick Bankey “Mooka’am” July 10, 1976 – November 5, 2025
Michael Patrick Bankey was born on July 10, 1976, and began his journey to the spirit world surrounded by family. A 1994 graduate of Onamia High School and Central Lakes College, he studied law enforcement and proudly served as a Hubbard County Deputy Sheriff, Pike Bay Police Officer, and Leech Lake Tribal Police Officer. Known for being firm but fair, he often said, “You do the crime, you do the time.”
Mike was proud of his Minnesota roots and was a loyal Vikings and Twins fan. He found peace in nature, visiting national parks and collecting patches, especially from his favorite — Theodore Roosevelt National Park. His humor, warmth, and easy charm drew people to him, especially children.
He is survived by his son, Andre; his mother, Anna; his father, Jim Bankey; his special moms, Sandy Curry and Diana Peterson; and siblings Annie, Gabriel (Cinnamon), Matthew (Samantha), and Jessica (Timothy). He is reunited with his brother Eric; niece Alexis; grandparents Julia & John Zimmer; aunt Patricia Scurlock; uncle Skip Sandman; cousin Elizabeth Zimmer; and other loved ones.
He was a cherished uncle to Ariana, Jake, Aaron, Megan, Ava, Wyatt, Abigail, and Sophie, and a lifelong friend to many, including his childhood crew, The Zimmer Boys. He is also remembered by Ashlan, with whom he shared an important part of his life and Sara, mother of his son.
Mike was humble, funny, and full of light. May he rest in peace.
A Celebration of Life will from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at Breezy Point Resort (9252 Breezy Point Drive). Arrangements are with the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby.
