Steven Jelencich

Steven Peter Jelencich age 84 of Cuyuna died peacefully at his home on Monday, January 18, 2016. Steven was born in Cuyuna to Vinko and Mildred (Magdich) Jelencich on February 5, 1931. He was the youngest of nine children.

Steven was drafted into the US Army while working at the Hanna Mines in 1952 at the age of 21. He served 13 months in Korea as Chief of Detail in the 196th Field Artillery. Steve went to barber school in 1963. He served his barber apprenticeship in Benson and Foley. On June 3, 1976 he married Marsha Caddy and together they raised two daughters. Steve rented a shop in the Spina Hotel in Ironton and later purchased a barbershop in Crosby, where he worked until 1987. In 1985 Steven had a heart attack and bypass surgery followed by the removal of a kidney because of cancer in 1987. Steve was diagnosed with low-grade lymphoma in 2001.

Steven was a 1949 graduate of the Crosby Ironton High School. He served as Crow Wing County Mine Inspector, he was a member of the Cuyuna Fire Department, the Myrin-James American Legion #443, Ironton, the Minnesota Trappers Association. Despite Stevens medical issues he remained positive and enjoyed his life. He hunted in Alaska, Canada, Montana, Colorado and Wyoming. He was a life long avid fisherman.

He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Marsha; two daughters, Kelly (Jeff) Jelencich-Klein and Debra (Floyd) Jelencich-Jensen; grandchildren, Gracesen, Kellen and Kelsey; Sisters, Katie Perpich and many nieces and nephews. Brothers-in-law, Larry Caddy, Bill Caddy; Kenneth Maddux, David Brown Sr. and Sister-in-law, Hazel Magdich.

Steven is preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings: sisters, Julia Maddux, Annie Brown, Ellen Peterson, Mary Nephew and brothers, John, Emil and Steve Magdich and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mable and Buster Caddy.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 25, 2016 at 11:00 am at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Crosby. Burial will be at the Lakewood Cemetery in Crosby with full military honors by the Myrin-James American Legion Post #443, Ironton. Visitation will be on Sunday at the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby from 3:00 to 5:00 pm and also 1 hour prior to the services at the Church on Monday.
