Warren Morton Steinke age 88 of Aitkin, formerly of Deerwood died at the Riverwood Healthcare Center in Aitkin. He was born on December 15, 1924 in Cuyuna to Gustav and Sadie (Palm) Steinke. He graduated from the Crosby-Ironton High School, Class of 1943. Warren was an accomplished all-around high school athlete, excelling in football, basketball, and track and field. He was a US Navy veteran from 1943 to 1946, serving throughout the Pacific Theater of Operations on the US "Liberty Ship"- USS DeGrasse. Warren owned and operated Steinke Oldsmobile in Ironton from 1946 until 2000. Over the years of operation, he sold and serviced Oldsmobile, International Harvester Trucks, Philco Applicances and Crosley automobiles. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Cedarbrook, and the Myrin-James American Legion Post #443, Ironton. He served as president of the Cuyuna Range Conservation Club during the 1960's. He took an active interest in his US Navy's ship's reunions. Warren also enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and farming. He owned a hobby farm on Blind Lake, north of Aitkin for several years, raising beef cattle.
Survivors include 2 sons; Jerry (Kristin Rajala) Steinke of Brainerd, Christopher (Sue) Steinke of Ironton; 1 daughter, Lynn (David) Fellerman of Aitkin; 1 sister, Marlys (Jake) Ravnik of Crosby; Sister-in-law, June Steinke of Deerwood; 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are his parents; wife, Margaret in 2010; and 1 brother, Wallace Steinke.
Funeral services will be held 1 pm on Monday, October 7, 2013 at St. John's Lutheran Church of Cedarbrook. Burial will be at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery with full military rites given by the Myrin-James American Legion Post and the Patriot Guard. Friends may call on Sunday at the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby from 5 to 7 pm and 1 hour prior to the services at the church on Monday.
